By Will Ashworth | February 9, 2009

For all those interested in cheaper, simpler ways to invest, Claymore may be throwing down the gauntlet against Barclay’s iShares. In Saturday’s Globe and Mail, Rob Carrick wrote an article about Claymore’s moves to make it cheaper and easier for small investors to make monthly purchases of ETFs, just like you can do with mutual […]

How Dumb Are GAP Shareholders?

By Will Ashworth | January 9, 2009

What does the GAP have to do to move the stock lower? Close its doors. I can’t believe that in such a terrible market, its stock is down only 28% in the past 52-weeks. Who owns this POS? You’d have to put a gun to my head to convince me to buy. I’ve written two […]

By Will Ashworth | December 29, 2008

This morning I happened to look at a list of the Top 50 Craft Brewers in 2007. Thanks to the What’s On Tap blog for the information. Running through the names, I found 15 of the 50 were operating in small towns of 30,000 people or less. The highest rating (determined by sales) for a […]

Analysts Have Buckle All Wrong

By Will Ashworth | December 17, 2008

The same people who blindly followed Bernie Madoff down the toilet probably read analyst reports and trust them implicitly. In it, she was discussing the reasons why specialty retailer Buckle (NASDAQ:BKE) is going to have troubles in 2009. As some of […]

By Will Ashworth | December 15, 2008

Gramercy, Louisiana (population 3,178) chipmaker Dirty Chips may not have much of a web site but they sure know how to make kettle chips. Available at my local Sobey’s in Toronto, I like the salt & vinegar variety best; although I must admit I haven’t tried them all. They are very tasty.

Good IPO / Bad IPO

By Will Ashworth | December 12, 2008

On December 4 I wrote an article for Investopedia that discussed the November 2007 IPO for American Public Education (NASDAQ:APEI), an online university catering to military personnel and other public servants. Private equity firm ABS Capital made 1737% from an $18 million investment over three-and-a-half years. That’s some return. A little too good if you […]

Here is my first post in what I hope will be thousands discussing all those great brands out there that still believe in small towns. Any recommendations about brands you know that operate in small towns are most welcome.
